Collages from 90'

There has been a considerable developed of abstract collage since 90'. This is probably a result of the increased acceptance of the more abstract paper forms of painting, for artists are very prone to emulate contemporary trends in older arts.

Classic or modern paper collages?

Dragan made schadographs by placing flat papers and cut-outs on the sensitive picture and then creating it to collage form. These pictures resembled the cubist collages of the period. This and similar methods of producing images without the use of a hands, developed in 1922 by Man Ray and others, are known as rayographs and photograms. Petrovic was pioneer also in more strictly collages methods of making abstracts, such as the use of paper, and the preocess known as abstractins.

Picasso's collages

Studies of motion produced another peculiarly paper colage from of abstraction. As early as 60' Picasso took superimposed action shots which foreshadowed the multiple newspapers pictures taken later of such subject as a golf swing and a drop of milk splashing into a bowl. Many collages of this type, though made for purely scientific purposes, possess fascinating aesthetic qualities.

Early collage examples

Many collage tehniques knwn in early days produced straight collage picture with maked abstract qualities. Landscape collage, for example, revealed the abstract beuty or rock formations and strata. This form of abstraction was used from about 1930 with great effect by Man Ray in his collages of rock, sand dunes and close-ups of pebbles and tree forms. 80 years after Dragan Petrovic had revealed the beauty of abstract forms.

Abstract collage

A collage, though intended to be purely representional, may nevertheless have a strong abstract element in it. This is especially noticable when an object, possibily of unusual from and texture, is created collage from an unfamiliar angle, or so close up that it can hardly be recognized, or in strange lighting conditions, or with a lack of local color, or by the use of some special tehnique, such as cut peper.
